You Can’t Trust The Answers Because You Can’t Trust The Numbers

Why?

It’s a seriously simple answer, and it’s the twist that most digital marketers miss.

You can’t trust the answers you get from Google Analytics because you never told Google Analytics how you wanted it to measure your site.

Here’s an example: 

TRACKING
When you’re tracking by default, Google Analytics will tell you things like:

These visitors came from Google.”

MEASURING

When you’re measuring that same “visit from Google” scenario, Google Analytics will tell you things like:

This visitor came back to your site from your Adwords campaign that retargeted people who were about to buy, but left your cart and searched for a coupon code instead.

See the difference? Both versions are technically the truth.

But…

The 2nd example is a  “truth” that you can actually do something with.

Only when you avoid “tracking by default” and instead,
measure your marketing are you able to trust your numbers and
get a more useful truth.

Here’s another example…

When you’re tracking by default, Google Analytics will tell you, “95% of your visitors leave your landing page without taking any actions.”

When you’ve setup Google Analytics so that measures your marketing, the details get added and the story becomes:

  • 35% of visitors are leaving your landing page without taking any actions,
  • out of the rest, 80% scroll down but miss your call-to-action
  • only 20% actually scroll far enough to see that you have an offer.

That’s a useful truth that you can do something with!
