If you want your emails opened, it comes down to writing the perfect subject line.
The whole point is to sell one thing: the click to open. The problem is that people tend to overthink it, when really all you want the subject line to do is to get the people to open your email.
To do this, you want to think of the benefits that your users will get when they open your email, which you can present by using certain psychological tricks…
For a Limited Time Only!
Urgency creates a strong need act fast on what action you want them to take. In the case of subject lines, it’s all about clicking the email open.
For example, if you’re sending an emailer for a promo on exclusive content, a great subject line would read:
Final Hours! Only a few hours left before the sale ends.
Give It Away
Who doesn’t love free stuff? A study was conducted that showed how when it comes to getting free stuff, the actual amount of the product is no longer a factor. The word itself, FREE, gives people a positive emotional rush has been known to improve open rates by 10%.
Be Curious
People are naturally curious so you want your subject line to get them to ask questions and wonder what you meant by it…pique their interest enough so that they want to click
For instance:
Do you have the one thing you need to convert customers?
Stress and Anxiety
Tap into people’s inherent fear and create this sense of anxiety so that they feel compelled to open that email.
If you’re using this technique, a great example would be:
9 Out of 10 Marketers Are Committing This Conversion Sin. Are You?
The Name Game
Personalize your emails–add the recipients name onto the subject line whenever you can. People who receive emails that have their names on it are less likely to throw it straight to the junk folder. Generally, it makes the recipients feel more special simply by knowing that the sender put more thought into the email.
To summarize…
Pick one of any of these subject line strategies and see how they work for you.
